Description

Abstract: Heart disease is a significant cause of death in the United States. Chest pain is among the most common symptoms that bring adults to hospital emergency departments (ED). Evidence-based treatment leads to improved patient outcomes and decreased cost of care. The project aimed to evaluate the impact of interprofessional education on the ED team’s adherence to evidence-based practice (EBP) for adult patients presenting with chest pain. The project was a pre-and post-design with a single cohort receiving interprofessional education. A PowerPoint presentation introduced a decision tree based on the Get With the Guidelines-CAD© bundle by the American Heart Association (AHA) and the HEART score, a cardiac risk-stratification tool. This was followed by a retrospective chart review of ED patients to measure adherence to EBP pre- and post-implementation. The pre-and post-knowledge test data were compared using a two-tailed paired-sample t-test noting significant improvement. Three metrics were measured in the pre-and post-implementation charts: use of the HEART score, door-to-EKG time, and door-to-troponin results. The Chi-square test of independence and summary statistics were used to analyze the mean door-to-EKG times. The analyses showed a significant increase in using the HEART score but no significant change in the EKG in less than 10 minutes and troponin results in less than 90 minutes metrics. The mean door-to-EKG time did decrease by more than three minutes in the pre-and post-groups. Keywords: chest pain, emergency department, interprofessional education, evidence-based practice, HEART score, risk stratification.
