Description
Submitted to the School of Nursing and HealthProfessions of Colorado Christian University Lakewood, Colorado in partialfulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF NURSING PRACTICE Abstract: Background: Since the SARS-CoV-2 (coronavirus) pandemic, practical nursing student attrition has been growing in a large technology center located in southwestern Oklahoma. Upon dismissal or personal withdrawal, students note not being ready for the academic workload and have reported not feeling prepared for the challenges within the nursing program. Purpose: The purpose of this evidence-based practice project was to determine the effectiveness of a preprogram workshop in practical nursing students' academic readiness. Method: Participants included 43 conditional admission practical nursing students approximately one month before the program start date. Participants completed a three-day preprogram workshop. An initial and end-of-workshop General Academic Self-Efficacy and General Self-Efficacy survey, and a workshop evaluation survey was obtained for each participant. Results: A two-tail paired samples t-test was performed to identify any significance between pre- and -post workshop surveys. There was a significant increase in post-workshop survey results that indicated improvement in academic self-efficacy and general self-efficacy among all participants. Keywords: Nursing education, practical nursing, nursing student, academic readiness, workshop.
