A Quality Improvement Project to Increase Provider Knowledge and Computed Tomography Lung Cancer Screening Rates
(eBook)
Abstract: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related mortality in theUnited States. Low screening rate is directly associated with the highmortality rate. Patient and provider knowledge about lung cancer screeningrecommendations and guidelines are lacking and is directly associated with thelikelihood of ordering lung cancer screenings (Lewis et al., 2019). The aim ofthis project was to increase provider knowledge in a primary care clinic in acommunity with an exceedingly high lung cancer mortality rate. An educationalvideo, provider toolkit, and patient resource packet were developed to increaseprovider knowledge and improve shared decision-making conversations. Datarelated to provider knowledge and the number of low-dose lung cancer screensordered were collected before and after implementing the education and resourcetoolkits. A two-tailed Mann-Whitney two-sample rank-sum test was used to evaluateknowledge and order rates. There was a statistically significant (p = .037)increase in provider knowledge following implementation. There was also a significant(p = .043) increase in lung cancer screening orders placed. In conclusion, this project supports measures to increase provider education to subsequentlyincrease screening and lung cancer detection which may ultimately decrease lungcancer mortality.
