Description

An 1877 novel by Anna Sewell, Black Beauty was the author’s first and only novel. Told through the point of view of a horse, the work was meant to be a sort of autobiography of the animal and a text that advocated for animal welfare.
Interestingly, the novel was banned in South Africa during apartheid. The censor assumed the work was about black rights as it had the words “black” and “beauty” in the title.
