Description

Originally published under the name Currer Bell in 1847, Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre follows the experiences of its eponymous main character and is told through her first-person perspective. The timeline of the novel begins with the orphaned Jane enduring the emotional and physical abuse of her guardian aunt and cousins. She is subsequently sent away to a charity school where she is subjected to further injustices and suffering, but where Jane also acquires a few close friends and confidantes. After six years at the school, both as a student and as a teacher, Jane finds a post as a governess at Thornfield Hall. She and her employer, the byronic character Mr. Rochester, are clearly drawn to one another and begin to fall in love, but soon after Jane's arrival at the gothic manor house, strange things begin to happen and dark secrets are revealed.
